All Shall Perish     Dwelling Madness

June 16, 2005

George Mason Univ. based As Dusk Unfolds kicked off this death metal extravaganza with an energetic set of melodic death and some nice extended guitar solos.  Since there were 7 bands performing for the evening, nobody except Hate Eternal had what I would call a long set.  Beyond the Grave was one of the song highlights.  Check out a great MP3 - Winter Last Breath

Brutal death outfit, Dwelling Madness, hit the stage next and pounded out some sonic mayhem including Strife.  Guest vocalist, Eric from Severed Head (last pic on right), joined the fun for a few songs.

All Shall Perish, from Oakland, CA, had some hardcore bits injected into their brutal death metal assault.  Their twin guitar attack was focused and loud.  Think  The Agony Scene meets Deicide might describe these guys a little.  Looks like Nuclear Blast has another winner.  Check out their MP3 - The Spreading Disease

Canada's Into Eternity were make their 2nd stop at Jaxx in the last 3 months having just opened for Amorphis back in March.  They are an unusual hybrid of death, power and progressive metal that comes across much better than you would think.  Of course talent always comes through and if you can write good songs, you have a future.  Century Media seems to think so - prove them right and buy a CD!  An excellent band.

A rousing hardcore like break-down intro kicked off the set and lead vocalist Stu Block took over from there.  Great set of pipes on this guy and he was feeling a lot better since the Amorphis show when he was fighting the flu.  Don't miss Into Eternity on yet another Jaxx visit in September opening for Finnish legends Stratovarius.  Here are a couple of MP3's from "Buried in Oblivion" - Spiraling Into Depression  and "Dead or Dreaming" - Dead Or Dreaming.

Incantation returned to Jaxx from their headlining show here back in January.  They kicked serious ass back then and they were on form again tonight.  Death Metal veterans since 1989 when they originally formed, Incantation hail from Johnstown, PA.

Brutal Death with attitude best describes this trio.  Not all hyper speed either as many of the songs were mid paced neck stretchers.  One of the songs played was Blasphemous Cremation from 1992's "Onward To Golgotha" release.  Check out Devoured Death from the same album.  Their latest release, "Decimate Christendom" is from 2004 and has the track Dying Divinity.  Doubt you'll find them passing the collection basket on Sunday.  Good stuff.

Incantation have some sweet wallpapers and Win Amp skins here.

The merchandise counters were busy as usual.  The ATM always gets hit hard.

Brazil's all conquering brutal death trio, Krisiun, were making a long awaited return to Jaxx.  First formed in 1990, they are also part of the metal family of Century Media Records, now a heavyweight label.

Punishing guitar and chugging rhythms best describe this blue collar death metal.  Not fancy or overly technical, just listenable and head bang able.  The super tight delivery and on stage passion come screaming through.  This is one of South America's finest musical exports.

Check out Soul Devourer from 2000's legendary release, "Conquerors of Armageddon".

The guys gather for a pre show shot.

Tampa's Technical Death Metal savant's, Hate Eternal, finally hit the stage shortly after 11 PM and proceeded to pound the crowd with a rapid fire twin song delivery.

Brutal, merciless and fast.  Hate Eternal trademarks.

What they played.  Note cute reminder for sound guy at bottom.   Each dual song rendition was preceded by a sampled intro.  Interesting and unique.

Hate Eternals latest release, "I, Monarch", on Earache Records has been receiving great reviews.

Front man Erik Rutan (at left) has not strayed far from his Morbid Angel background.

The set back drops kept with the "I, Monarch" album cover theme.  Check out a video from the new album here.

All in all, a hell of a show for $15, short sets by a lot of bands not withstanding.  The summer of great metal at Jaxx will continue.  Hope to see you at a show!
