Went for the Behemoth/Septicflesh show, which was great.

But I noticed that a gay interior designer from Seattle got his faggy hands on the place.  What's with the orange paint on the walls and the shitty lamps hanging from the ceiling?  I started getting ready to order an espresso and listen to smooth jazz.

Not gonna happen, at least for awhile. All of the remodeling to "beautify" Jaxx is for those Special Events which are Dance nights for the Hispanic population (and anyone else wanting to come). To be able to make money and keep the place open Jay had to do this. The metal shows just aren't making enough money to pay the bills. He will still be having 8-10 metal/rock shows a month. So basically if you want to see any shows at Jaxx at all you'll just have to deal with the place being a bit more upscale looking.

Went back to jaxx for the first time since the remodel for the Epica show tonight.  I was rather shocked at the changes because it really does not feel like a metal venue anymore.  I understand the economic standpoint of opening it up to other things, but the changes make it seem like you are trying to go completely away from what you are known for.  I know you have put together a pretty good lineup for the rest of the year of bands, but it makes me wonder how much longer you are going to stay with the metal format before giving it up completely.

One of the major issues I see, at least from the standpoint, is the lack of 21+ shows and the lack of big name weekend shows.  Maybe im just getting too old (granted im only 26) but the teenagers at the show seem to only really be there to say they went to a metal show, this also could be caused by the lack of any real mainstream metal bands.  But most of the shows Ive been to over the past 3 years I see the same thing, a gaggle of 16 year olds who get there run to he front and just stand there the whole night without even really appearing to know any of the bands playing.  They never seem to get any kind of food or drinks and essentially get pissed off if anyone on the floor pushes against them (its a metal show the pit should be moving).  I can say that its this type of crowd that has made me stay away from a couple of shows I was on the fence on.  Im not sure if others are like me on this as well, but the young crowd that doesnt appear to know anything about metal really turns me off of going to random shows here and there.

Also as I stated the lack of big name weekend shows, at least the bigger bands in my mind.  I work in DC live in fairfax and do the commute early mornings which also stops me from going to shows.  Is it that Jaxx isnt a big enough venue to pull in many of the bands for Friday/Saturday shows?  This also limits the people I know outside the DC metro area who would go to many of the shows if it didnt mean taking a day off of work.  There really arent many venues out there in the area that will get quality metal bands like you so I think you could probably draw from further out if more of the big shows were on the weekend.

Unfortunately every band in the Country can't only play weekend shows, if a certain band is going to be in your area on a Tuesday it's either book them for Tuesday or don't book them at all. Jay would love to do 21 and up shows and have a big band play on weekends, but there are a ton of factors involved, a band needs to be in this area on a weekend, they have to have mostly 21 and up fans, they have to draw well enough to be sure that Jay can afford them, and they have to have a low enough price so that the ticket price doesn't have to be too high, then on top of all that they have to be a big band, but not too big because then they would play at the 9:30 club. Jaxx holds 500 people, the 9:30 holds 1000+, so they can offer more money to a band because they can have more paying customers to pay for the band. And then, more often than not, the show doesn't draw as well as hoped for whatever reason, a bigger similar band at Nissan say, or at the 9:30, or it rains hard, or snows, then the club loses money, sometimes a lot. Jaxx used to be known for a lot of 80's bands (still kind of is) but they don't draw enough people anymore, which is why you have festivals like M3 and so on.

There's no magic answer :-/

When the question was asked what happened to the piss and vomit the answer was given, "Every 30 years we have to clean it up."

Jaxx is still the same kick ass place it was before and now with the more open interior there really is no bad vantage point for any given show. When we, the metal fans, start filling the place up again then maybe Jay will let us paint the walls black again. Wink

Hateful speech like this will not be tolerated on the Jaxx forums. I can see from your screen name your intelligence level matches your post count, and if there are any more posts from you like this, you will be put on post moderation (which requires a moderator to approve all posts before they show) or banned.

As for what is "metal", take a trip outside the area and check out venues like Trocadero, Rams Head Live, Penny Arcade, etc. Who says "metal" has to be dingy, run down, and putrid looking?

Putrid looking is one thing, but it's true that the interior color doesn't seem to be very appealing to most of the people who have gone there, recently. You can have the place look stylish without having it be too expensive.

When I first saw the concert hall part on Thur, I thought" what the hell" but I didn't think it was horrible. However after a while especially after the bands started playing, it felt home again and I didn't even think about it anymore.  The hallway I'm not crazy about but I don't think it's because of the paint. The lobby just felt empty without all the photos of bands and the posters of upcoming shows. I think I did hear that they might be coming back.

This, but Friday instead of Thursday and with less "what the hell." From all of the fuss everyone was making I figured it had been painted day-glo orange or something.

I'm with pazo2fan.  The first time I saw the new concert hall paint scheme I thought "oh wow, they painted in here" and then immediately went back to drinking my beer and jamming to the music.  Change happens, so long as hard rock/metal bands get to play a few times a month, I

Expensive is a relative term. The walls are painted. They will stay the color they are now until it is deemed another change is in order. But considering how much money was already spent, that's not likely to happen soon. Let's please all move on from this. I don't get invited to your house and complain about what color you painted your living room. The color of the paint has nothing to do with the quality of the bands that come through here. Get over it.

The pictures are being kept nice and safe until we put them up again, which we will. As for the videos between sets, it's a good idea, but I'm not sure we have the equipment for it. If you have a video machine you're willing to donate to the club, complete with metal videos you're recorded for our listening and viewing pleasure, we'd love to have them.  Grin

You know, I probably could make a pretty good video set.  I have about 8-10 hours of old Headbanger's Ball videos (from the 80's) as well as purchased metal DVDs.  I can't remember if you guys aleady have some sort of big screen gizmo in the lounge?  I might be willing to donate something to play them on, but I'm not fat-walleted enough to donate an LCD to go with it.

Bikertom:

LOL! We wouldn't expect an LCD, but if you do happen to come by a spare one, I have been looking to get one myself........  Tongue

Well, I'll look into what we can and can't do. That would be a really generous donation, and while we do have a big rear projector TV, if I'm correct, I will have to check into the hookups and such. Or next time you're in the club, feel free to find me and I'll let you take a look and you can tell me if what you have works.

Thanks!!
