Quiet Riot lead singer - Kevin DuBrow

Kevin DuBrow - Quiet Riot

(October 29, 1955 – November 25, 2007)

Kevin DuBrow, the lead singer of the 1980s heavy metal band Quiet Riot, has died, CNN has confirmed. He was 52.  DuBrow died at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to TMZ.com. The Clark County coroner's office was examining the body to determine the cause of death, according to TMZ.  "I'm at a loss for words. I've just lost my best friend," Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali told CNN. "Out of respect for both Kevin and his family, I won't comment further. There's going to be a lot of speculation out there, and I won't add to that. I love him too much."

Quiet Riot hit the top of the charts with its 1983 album, "Metal Health," considered by some sources as the first heavy metal album to hit No. 1. The album was driven by the group's cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize," which hit the Top 40.

Jaxx salutes a metal giant who will always be remembered.  Our sympathies to his family and many fans and friends.

Vitek - Decapitated

Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka – our brother and dearest friend succumbed to head injuries sustained after a bad van accident while on tour in Russia. He was 23.
One of the youngest and most promising drummers in the genre, together with Decapitated he has consistently released albums both crushing and invigorating in their musicianship. Extremely talented – he has been involved in other side projects: Dies Irae, Panzer X.
He will be missed and can not be replaced.  The metal scene will be much sorrier with his passing…

Hughie Thomasson - The Outlaws

With great sadness, we must announce the passing of our friend, Hughie Thomasson. Hughie died unexpectedly late Sunday night (Sept 9th, 2007) of an apparent heart attack at his home in Brooksville, Florida.  - The Outlaws

NY Yankee shortstop - Philip Francis Rizzuto

Phil Rizzuto

Sept 25, 1917 - August 13, 2007

Jay Nedry, Jaxx owner and life long Yankee fan, expresses his personal condolences at the passing of Yankee great, Phil Rizzuto.  A great ball player and a class act.

Fan Memories from the NY Times

Rizzuto was called a mensch, a Yiddish word for a good person, and that quality emerges during reminiscences about fans meeting him. Bob Schmitt said he watched in stunned amazement when the Scooter appeared as the surprise guest at his friend’s birthday party: “Finally our host’s father said, ‘Boys, it’s Phil Rizzuto!’ He didn’t have to tell us — we all knew.”

Donny L. wrote that he sent an audio tape to Rizzuto asking if he would record a birthday wish for his 80-year-old mother. The tape never came back, but a month later, a contrite Rizzuto called and “began apologizing, telling me how sorry he was he missed my mom’s birthday because the stadium mail wasn’t forwarded in time.”

A fan named Myke wrote that in 1960, he approached Rizzuto at Yankee Stadium to sign a ball autographed by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Cookie Lavagetto. He asked for Rizzuto’s signature, using an Italian phrase his father taught him. Rizzuto, he wrote, answered “in Italian that I was a nice polite boy and his voice trailed off as he looked at the ball’s signatures and broke into loud English, ‘Holy cow, kid, where’d you get this?’ He signed and dated the ball, shook my hand and gave me a bottle of Yoo-Hoo.”

They wrote about meeting Rizzuto dashing from the stadium as he left games early; how he taught children to bunt; how he didn’t refuse requests for autographs even when Joe DiMaggio did, and how he slashed a line drive while standing on a wooden box when he batted at an Old-Timers’ Day.

An artist called C P who was upset about Rizzuto’s delayed election to the Baseball Hall of Fame sent him a copy of a sketch he had made of a prototype Hall plaque; Rizzuto returned the gesture several years later by sending him credentials to attend his induction. “It was such a terrific day! (and my sketch looked pretty darn close to the actual plaque),” C P wrote.

The writers also summoned moments from radio and television broadcasts. John B. wrote that Rizzuto once stopped telling a story to interject, “And Mattingly flies out,” to which his boothmate, Bill White, added, “Uh, Phil, Mattingly struck out two batters ago.” During a night game, John K. Casey wrote, White noted that a large black raven had flown in the stadium. He wrote, “Wistfully, White said, ‘Nevermore.’ Without missing a beat, Scooter replied, ‘You know, Bill, I don’t know Shakespeare!’ ” In the Rizzuto aural experience, Peter Kohan wrote, “the game itself was almost incidental, but at the same time, it was woven into the fabric of life.”

A writer named Dave praised Rizzuto for his “absurdist” diversions — “keep the ziti warm, Cora, we’re going into the top of the 12th” — and consistent ability to sound like “an amazed kid at his first ballgame.”

A fan identified as Sue grew up Brooklyn, where she said her parents let her stay up late only to watch Yankees games.

“I can’t tell you how many summer nights I fell asleep in front of the Magnavox TV to the sound of Phil’s voice,” she wrote. “After he retired from broadcasting, I told my mom I would never have another good night’s sleep.”

Brad Delp - lead singer for bestselling '70s band Boston

Brad Delp, whose soaring tenor on songs such as "More Than Feeling" gave voice to the best-selling rock band Boston, died March 9th at the age of 55.  His death has been ruled a suicide.  A Danvers native, Mr. Delp helped form Boston with guitarist and studio mastermind Tom Scholz, drummer Sib Hashian, guitarist Barry Goudreau, and bassist Fran Sheehan in the early 1970s.  The group's self-titled 1976 debut album was one of the fastest selling in rock history. Songs such as "More Than A Feeling," "Foreplay/Long Time," and "Rock and Roll Band" helped the album sell over 17 million copies and is a staple of classic rock radio to this day.  - The Boston Globe

Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection 1975-2006

Metal Community mourns death of Jon Nödtveidt

DISSECTION frontman Jon Nödtveidt has committed suicide.  Nödtveidt formed DISSECTION in 1989 and released two full-length albums with the group — "The Somberlain" (1993) and "Storm of the Light's Bane" (1995) — before he was convicted in Sweden of felony murder of 37-year-old homosexual Algerian Josef Ben Maddour in 1997. He was released from prison in 2004, at which point he restarted DISSECTION

DISSECTION announced in May that it would split up imediately following its final performances in support of its recently released CD, "Reinkaos". The band was subsequently forced to cancel its two previously announced appearances in North America (Sept. 1 at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, CA and Sept. 6 at B.B. King Blues Club in New York City) after Nödtveidt was denied legal entry into the United States as a result of his conviction.  DISSECTION's most recent album, "Reinkaos", was released in May on The End Records.  Official Dissection website statement regarding Jon's death can be found here

VOIVOD Guitarist DENIS 'PIGGY' D'AMOUR Dead Of Colon Cancer

Voivod's Snake and Piggy at Ozzfest 2003

VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour passed away Friday night (August 26) at approximately 11:45 p.m. due to complications from advanced colon cancer — so advanced that the disease had spread to his liver. D'Amour slipped into a coma Thursday night and died less than 24 hours later in the palliative care unit of a Montreal hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 45 years old.

Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil reported yesterday that D'Amour — who was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier in the summer — first entered the hospital for a routine operation, but several complications led his doctors to suspect more problems. Then the grim verdict was revealed: the cancer, already too advanced, was inoperable.

Only two months ago, D'Amour was in the studio working on the 14th album from the Canadian thrash-metal pioneers VOIVOD. More than two dozen tracks are believed to have been demoed for the CD, for which the group recently inked a deal with The End Records. However, the band were forced to put studio work on hold while bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) was treated for tendonitis.  In a recent interview with Billboard.com, Newsted spoke about the material slated to appear on the group's next CD. "It's the most complete demos I've ever been involved in," he said. "[VOIVOD singer] Snake has already chosen his effects — exact timing of milliseconds for delay. We've had a long time to develop the demos, so there's about 23 or 25 songs that are absolutely listenable right now."

Newsted was a huge fan of VOIVOD before he was invited to join and he remains a great admirer to this day. "They created something a long, long time ago that may have been emulated many, many times since — but nobody can do it like the original," he offered.

Prior to his hospitalization, D'Amour laid down guitar tracks for a reunion CD from the legendary AUT'CHOSE, a '70s band from Montreal. That album is expected to surface next summer.

Jaxx Night Club extends its condolences to all of Voivod's family and friends .

Former VADER Drummer DOC Dead At 35

According to a posting at the Polish music web site CGM.pl, former VADER drummer Krzysztof "Docent" Raczkowski (a.k.a. Doc) has passed away at age 35. No further details about his death are currently available. [UPDATE: This has now been confirmed by VADER's official web site, Vader.pl]  In a March 2005 statement announcing Doc's departure from the group, VADER frontman Peter said, "Doc pretty hard tried to 'fight' against his weaknesses, which were troubles for all of us. Finaly he had not prevailed over that battle... All in all, he attempted. . . VADER today is not just a friendship anymore — it's our life with armies of man involved in music, releases and — first of all — fans waiting for shows or new albums... This is a high responsibility, not too many know about. If a person, even the most talented one, cannot stand it — [he] has to leave... That was Doc's decision as well."   In an April 2005 interview with AbrasiveRock.com, VADER guitarist Mauser elaborated on Doc's "weaknesses," stating, "He had a problem with alcohol and this is the problem. Maybe in the future, if he will be alright, he may be back in the band. Maybe someday. We will see what happens."

Jaxx Night Club extends sympathies to Doc's family, friends and fans. He will be missed.

David Wayne dies from crash injuries

David Wayne   Jan 1, 1958 - May 10, 2005

The following press release has been posted at the David Wayne's Metal Church web site:

"On behalf of David Wayne's Metal Church, we would like to express our deepest sorrow in the passing of our metal brother, David Wayne. This is not only a loss for us as a band and his family, but also millions of metalheads throughout the world. David died due to complications from injuries he sustained in a head-on automobile accident several months ago.    "David Wayne was the patented scratchy vocals of several METAL CHURCH albums and was in the process of returning to the metal scene with his new band lineup. His goal was to return to the sounds of METAL CHURCH's albums released in 1984 and 1986. We will always remember the burning words and vocals in 'Gods of Wrath', 'Watch the Children Pray', and 'Start the Fire'.  David and his current band had just completed several new songs and were ready to head to the recording studio after their European tour dates this summer.
"Along with David's family and friends, we would ask that cards, letters, and flowers be sent to the below address. Additionally, donations are being accepted to help David's family with funeral expenses.

American Head Charge guitarist dies on tour bus

MTV.com is reporting that the death of AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE guitarist Bryan Ottoson has been determined to be the result of a prescription-drug overdose, according to North Charleston, South Carolina police records. The 27-year-old musician's body was discovered Tuesday (April 19) in a sleeping bunk on the band's tour bus in North Charleston, where the group was set to play at the Plex club. Police found a pill bottle containing "numerous amounts of prescription medicine" in Ottoson's bed.  Members of AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE told police they last saw Ottoson alive at around 4 a.m. on the morning of April 18, just as the band was departing Jessup, Maryland, for North Charleston. Ottoson had consumed "a large amount of alcohol at a bar" in Jessup that evening, according to police documents. Police were called to the scene at around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening; by that time, Ottoson was dead. Bassist Chad Hanks (known to fans by his stage name, Mr. H.C. Banks III) and guitarist Karma Cheema told police that Ottoson was a "heavy sleeper, and it was not uncommon for him to sleep late before a concert."   The report also claims police were told that Ottoson had been "consuming unknown prescription medications".  AHC recently played at Jaxx on Feb 28th, 2005 opening for OTEP and just played the 930 Club opening for Mudvayne on April 13th.  Jaxx extends it's sympathies to Bryans family, friends and fans on this tragic loss.

Guitarist Rod Price of Foghat Dies at 57

WILTON, New Hampshire - Guitarist Rod Price, founding member of the blues boogie band Foghat, died Tuesday after falling down a stairway at his home, a family friend said. He was 57.  The London native's solos drove Foghat to three platinum and eight gold records during the band's quarter-century career. After many years of touring he settled in Wilton in 1994.   Many in town knew Price as a loving father who never missed his son's baseball, soccer or basketball games. Fewer people knew of Price's musical background.  Price had played with Champion Jack Dupree, Eddie Kirkland, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon and Honey Boy Edwards.  In recent years, Price concentrated on his blues projects, cutting several CDs and giving private guitar lessons at his home. -  Rod last played here in 2003 and was a good friend of Jay Nedry and Jaxx Night Club. Darrell Abbott - at age 38 (Damageplan & Pantera)

HATE ETERNAL guitarist Eric Rutan (ex-MORBID ANGEL) has issued the following  thoughts on the passing of guitar legend "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (DAMAGEPLAN, ex-PANTERA):

"I have thought so long and hard on what I could possibly say that has not already been said about the tragic death of Dimebag Darrell Abbott but I  felt compelled to make a statement with the utmost respect for a true guitar god and a tremendous person. I had the pleasure of touring with Pantera while in Morbid Angel on two separate occasions. We toured together for 16 weeks. Those 16 weeks were life changing for me in so many ways. Being a guy who has just been content touring and recording records all these years, to have the opportunity to play arenas with one of the biggest and best metal bands out there was overwhelming, for I never thought that opportunity would ever happen, yet  it did. It changed my life forever. I watched Dimebag play almost every night, and every night I was amazed at the pure talent that poured out of him and the incredible emotion he possessed. Out of respect and knowing that there were always people hanging around on stage and backstage I always tried to stay out of the way. I was just so grateful and overwhelmed with the whole experience.  One day Dimebag asked me "Brother, how come you don't ever come on stage or backstage to hang out?" and I told him "I did not want to bother anyone or get in the way." His response was "You're going to play a song with us one night", which totally made me so nervous like I had never played a show in my life. A week went by and I heard nothing about it. Then one night in San Jose, CA, 10 minutes before Pantera went on, security came to get me and said I was wanted in the backstage dressing room. I literally shit my pants with wonder. Dimebag said "Tonight is the night brother." He showed me 'Walk' in like 5 minutes on a totally different tuned guitar and he said "See you up there." I remember not believing this was happening. I practiced and then went to the stage. I came out for the  encore and he announced my name and I played with Pantera for over 12,000 people.  That was the last tour Pantera ever did. He let me play one of his beloved guitars, the rebel flag guitar through one of his multiple stacks.  It changed my life in so many ways and meant so much to me that someone of his stature and fame would reach out like that with such generosity and how down to earth he was.

It was one of the biggest events in my life that I will never forget. I was and still am a part of an underground band, yet he treated me with the same respect he would show a musician who had won Grammy's.  It was life altering.  I have a video tape of the show and always pop it in once in a while to reminisce on one of the best things in my life that meant so much. I don't think he ever realized how much that meant to me and I will always be grateful to Dimebag for that, as well as for Vinnie, Phil and Rex for these are memories I will always cherish.  I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to Vinnie and the Abbott family and to Pantera and Damageplan's family and crew for the loss of not only a tremendous guitarist, but an outstanding person. He will so be missed.  Dimebag, you will always be a legend and a person I will never let die nor ever forget, your spirit will carry on forever! -Erik Rutan."

Guitar World magazine has published what it claims is "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott's final interview, conducted by Joshua Gropp on December 1, 2004, on DAMAGEPLAN's tour bus outside the Phoenix in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Gropp is a 22-year-old jazz-guitar student at Humber College in Toronto and is also a guitar teacher. He interviewed Dime for the school newspaper, The Humber College Et Cetera.

Gropp's interview appears in Guitar World's "Guitar Legends #79" special collectors' issue, featuring Dimebag on the cover. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:

Gropp: In the past you've said that a person is influenced by everything you see and hear, whether you know it or not. Youd dad had a studio while you were growing up, where he recorded a lot of local blues artists. Do you think that music influenced you as well?

Dimebag: "Yeah, it definitely influenced me. I mean, everything gets in there one way or another, you know? I don't know if it came from my dad's studio or from listening to my mom's eight-track LYNYRD SKYNYRD tapes back in the day before I even knew what VAN HALEN was or BLACK SABBATH or KISS. There's a shitload of kick-ass blues players around here in Texas, and we go out a lot and check these guys out. And it's going to get in there, you know? It's not 150 percent pure metal for me my whole life, you know? I love rock and roll, I love the blues, I love KING'S X, MERLE HAGGARD, DAVID ALLEN COE, you name it. A lot people that are in bands think you have to preach against every other kind of music in the world to be 'hardcore,' but that, to me, is just Hitler bullshit. Go ahead and keep you fucking ears closed, you closed-minded fucks, I'm gonna be jamming. There are so many different things that music can do to you besides beat you between the fucking eyes, you know? Of course, that's the favorite feeling, and you've got to have your favorite thing, but give me a goddamn break! Have some variety in the fucking shit, you know?"

Gropp: It seems that, with bands like DAMAGEPLAN, SHADOWS FALL, CHILDREN OF BODOM and others, guitar soloing is becoming more popular again.

Dimebag: "I think it's getting a little bit more like that. For a while, people were like, 'Fuck guitar solos — they're boring,' but I never bought into any of that shit. And all the people that it was coming from were those dudes that play the seven-string guitars that could only play the top four strings. So I think everyone that's into guitar playing has been screaming out for the last couple of years and now you see more dudes doing solos, or at least short little bits. But I'm not into the short bit thing — it almost seems like you're putting it in there to say, 'Look, I could do it if I wanted to.' But that ain't the truth — either you can fucking rip it or you can't. I mean, what if Zakk Wylde put out a record and it had only two little short solo snippets? Dude, you would know that that ain't right. You didn't get the whole meal deal!"

Gropp: What advice would you give someone just starting out in the business?

Dimebag: "Well, if you're just trying to make it and get rich in this business, just go ahead and hang it up right now. Between the record companies being the way they are and the fact that people can just download one song instead of buying a whole album, it's hard to make a good living nowadays. But if you want to do it because you fucking love it, then go for it — that's why we're still doing it, because we love it.

"When I was a kid, I thought it was fucking Ace Frehley with the fucking smoking guitar, partying, fucking hell-raising all the time, non-stop. But once we got a record deal, I found out how much work was involved. You've got to be really mentally set to take it on if you're going to jump into the whole full-blown rig. You might be able to make some money and have some gold or platinum records, but people just don't pay for music the way they used to, and it's harder to make a good living in this business."

Bates AltizerDear Friends & Family ~

I have been struggling to deal with how to tell everyone this but my Dad, Bates Altizer, passed away Monday 1-7-08 @ 2:29pm. He was a man among men. He picked one of the most beautiful days to leave us. It was sunny and 70 degrees out. I think he just wanted out of the hospital :)

He was in a lot of pain and is in a better place now. He is with my Grandmother & Grandfather Altizer, and his older brothers E-Tom, and Charlie Ray.

We will be celebrating his life with an Irish Wake on Monday the 14th at 5pm until 7pm at the Crystal City Sports Pub - 2nd  floor(See address below). All are welcome! My father loved people and for any of you who had the chance to meet him he would want you to stop by, have beer, and celebrate the life that he lived for 55, almost 56 years!

Thank you all for the support you have given to both Tim and I over the last two weeks. It has touched both our hearts to have you all close at hand and ready for either of us to cry on. This is a larger than life loss, much like the personality of my father.

Have a great night; hug the ones you love, and we hope you to some of you there Monday! (There will be not be a funeral or service-Dad's wishes!)

Please do not send flowers as we will be sending information about a charity to donate to in my fathers memory later in the week.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Robert L. “Bob” Dotolo

Robert L. “Bob” Dotolo, Jr., 43, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 in Alexandria, VA.  Born in Norwich, CT on October 25, 1963, Bob was the first son of Robert and Patricia Dotolo.  Bob was a 1981 graduate of Norwich Free Academy and attended Mohegan Community College before moving to the Washington D.C. area.  A lover of music, Bob formed the heavy metal band, Thud, in the early 1990s.  He and his band toured the east coast, appealing to the hard rock community of the time.  Bob carried his love of music into the 2000s in collaborations with Project Failing Flesh and later as the lead singer of King Giant.  His heavy lyrics and intense vocals resonated with many and the band enjoyed an underground following.  Friends and relatives were often treated to homemade postcards appearing in their mailboxes from Bob.  Designed in a comic book quality, Bob’s postcards could always inspire a smile.  He will be deeply missed.  Bob is survived by his parents Robert and Patricia Dotolo of Norwich; his brother, Michael Dotolo of Union City; his sister Ann (Dotolo) Haggerty and her husband Charles of Norwich, and his sister Jennifer Dotolo, of Colchester.  He also leaves behind his nephew, Michael Dotolo Jr. of Waterbury and his niece, Nicole Haggerty of Norwich and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Wilhelm Michael Kobia  (June 20, 1951 - March 2, 2006)

Christopher “Kit” Landis

1971 - 2006

Of Fairfax, VA. He is survived by his wife, Terri Landis; mom and dad, Bonnie and Lester Miyaoka; his father, David Landis of Palmdale, CA; two daughters, Christina and Lydia and two sons, Jason and Adam.  He is also survived by a brother, Randy Miyaoka and his siblings in California, Matthew, Michael, and Sarah.

Kit was a local drummer for many years in the metal heydays of the mid 80’s to early 90’s and was a founding member of Militia that was based in Springfield Va.  Kit was passionate about his drumming and spent many years crafting his skills which helped lead his band to many local and regional shows throughout the DC & Baltimore region.  He will be sadly missed for his dark sense of wit and his ability to always be there for anyone who needed a friend.   We have lost a kick ass drummer and a friend, but heaven has gained a true rocker to the core.   Rock on our dear friend.  All of your family and friends.
